I'm glad you asked this question... my one year is coming up in october. i'm going to put this on my watch list. although, he and i are thinking about hawai'i for our anniversary.. but its more like, we've dated for the past three years but have only been "official" since last october. soooo yeah. also, I'm not sure if hawai'i is an option for you due to age (possibly) or money (not implying anything) I'd go with a watch. a nice shirt. some expensive cologne. or you could make a photo album for you two with pictures, concert ticket or movie ticket stubs you've attended together. maybe even some professional pictures of yourself for him.

If it's a girl, flowers or jewelry. A guy maybe jewelry like a chain in silver or gold. It depends on how much you want to spend. You can give a card and that shows you remember.
You should do something nice. You can go out to a special restaurant that you would never go to except on a special occasions. Whatever you do, if it's from the heart, I'm sure they will like it. It's the "thought that counts!"

When people have been married for 1 year , traditionally they get a gift of paper. So how about tickets to an upcoming event? the paper in the tickets representing the 1 year.. just a thought

For my first year anniversary I posted a menu on the back door that said "Little Bear Cafe' " (he called me little bear) and made him an awesome dinner... I also cut out lots of little paper hearts, wrote things on them and scattered them throughout the house..
for our second year.. I shipped him a box (we lived together but it's always fun to get something in the mail) with 7 different greeting cards in it .. that way he had one to open each day..
