I went to UC Davis. Graduated 20 years ago. I chose it over Berkeley for a number of reasons:
It had a better / more targetted physics program than the other UC's which is what I started studying. I graduated with a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics.
I actually had a chance of getting to know some of my professors because it was a smaller university. (17,000 students at the time).
Fewer distractions. There were plenty of distractions at Davis but it wasn't trivial to get on BART and go into SF.
Davis is a smallish community where as Berkeley is in the heart of a city.
If Davis has the programs that want for your degree, it would be an excellent choice.

UC-Davis is a very good school. All the UC schools are good.
UC-Berkeley is one of the best universities in the world.
The only way I would choose Davis over Berkeley is if I was doing something agricultural (because Davis is one of the best Ag schools in the world).
Other things to consider -- Davis is in the middle of the Central Valley -- that means it is hot much of the year and NOTHING is nearbye.
Berkeley is a very strange place -- but the weather is great, and it is across the bay from San Francisco -- with easy access.
There are worse things in life to do than waiting an extra six months.
Before you decide -- look into this possibility. Is it possible for you to go to Davis for six months and then go to Berkeley?

Berkeley is more prestigious. Have you thought about what you will do during the one year wait. Maybe you can get a job and save up. However Berkeley is a more competitive environment. You might not have fun there is all the students are busy studying so they can out do each other. Davis is not so bad in that respect. if you dont care about partying up all night and want to study your brains out go to Berkely. If you want to have a bit more fun go to Davis. Take the wait time as an opportunity to save money or just relax.

Depends. What's your major. If agricultural, Davis is better. Business? Berkeley. Either way, they're both excellent schools, but Berkeley is just better known. Just don't decide based on when you'll be admitted. Consider your major and which school offers the best opportunities.
