Is it a sign of desperation?

i think it is a nervous reaction to a situation that someone may find hard to believe or handle. for instance, when my son was
1 1/2 he fell and broke his leg. it wasn't readily apparent, but he wouldn't put any weight on it so i took him to ther ER and they diagnosed a brake. anyway while they were casting it and he was wimpering and i had to stay outside the room with my daughter i found i had the urge to laugh. don't get me wrong i found nothing humorous in the situation, but i think i felt so bad that my little toddler had a broken leg and i was nervous and anxious and i think my body said, "quick laugh, or you might cry and fall apart". i don't really know, maybe laughing releases certain chemicals in to your brain and body which in turn helps you handle the stress of the situation better. it's just called nervous laughter. it may also give you a few precious moments in which to grasp on to your sanity so you can bring yourself under control and not completely spaz out. that feeling of immediate disbelief can give you a pause to bring back a modicum of self control. i have heard that smiling and laughter is good for you and i'm not sure what feel good chemicals these feelings release in to the bloodstream, but maybe the nervous laughter is a sort or self preservation trigger hard wired in to our brain so these chemicals can be realsed and aid us in holding on.
i have als noticed people laugh when they are lying too ad have been caught in the lie, not sure what that means exactly?

One of my daughters does that all the time - and I know on most of those occasions she really hurt. She's done it since she's been about 3 years old, and is now in her mid-twenties (still doing it). She says she actually does think it's funny - even though it hurts.

In most cases it is likely an ego defense mechanism designed to avoid the pain of whatever is making them want to cry.

it is a nervous reaction for me... I have done it at a funeral before and felt terrible!! I also do laugh when telling a sad story .... and my family thinks that i am morbid .. but i don't mean to laugh at all.

I broke a aquarium (standing on it duh) and a 2' by 7' piece of glass went up the outside of my thigh 7' deep into my leg. I was bleeding to death and I was laughing so hard it was un real
I think pain is pretty F-ing funny

they try to fight it, the body natrually wants to survive, so it laughs to create happy endorphins... but, youll break down soon enough...oh yeah a personal story, i had to tell my 5 yr old daughter her cat died, and i couldnt help laughing, had to leave the room, my husband broke the news...it was uncontolable
