Consider this scenario. A company has decided (the government didn't make them!) that they want or need to add Spanish language support (and perhaps other languages). A business decision... OK.
So, if they use an automated telephone system, what exactly are their options for adding the option(s) of Spanish (etc)?
1) They could start the list with the OTHER language(s), then if you did NOT choose any of those, wait a few seconds and default to English... meaning all English customers have to wait through all the OTHER options before getting what they want. .
pretty dumb option, I'd think
OR
2) They could give the English option FIRST, so you can press the button quickly and get on with it. (And, of course, they could ALSO default to English if you end up not doing anything at all... and I know some do so.)
So, which would you prefer ?! Unless you "prefer" that the company not be ALLOWED the option of offering support in anything BUT English, I don't see your beef.
Then again, suppose we pressure businesses to offer phone support only in English. In that case, you can expect the following (at least):
a) they'll lose business to companies that offer the foreign language support
b) the English-only support will be slowed way down by longer and repeat calls with people who have difficulty with English (or at least conducing certain types of complicated transactions) struggling to conduct their transactions in English. . . . and you'll complain about how long you end up waiting on the phone. . . .
So, do you have a better idea?

Left wingers??? Shut the hell up and read the Constitution, at no point does it reveal national language. You don't think the framers thought that ppl would consider english the national language or argue that it should be. Well they knew, and their wisdom has guided us through 200+ years of existence, there is no reason we should dobt their doings now or consider changing them....

YOU DON'T, If the system is well designed .
A good voice mail system will go something like... (forgive my lousy language skills...)
"por Espanol marque cinco",
...etc. for each language offered.
Then after that "for English please wait one moment"
No button to press for us lazy English speakers. Some systems even automaticly pick English if you don't press a different number.
Are you too good to press buttons because you speak English?
If you don't want to press "one" you can always hang up!

Because English may not be your first language, or even one you understand or speak.

Because USA is SUPPOSED to be a multicultural (and therefore a multilingual) society... whether it is or not is up for debate.
