I would have to say Sedona, Arizona. The drive up to and through is amazing in its variation of color, vegetation, and landscape. Imagine going for a hike and finding the mountain your on to be covered in cactus, sparse plant life, then to look across the peak and find that your looking at a forest covering the other mountain. Besides the plant life you have amazing views, hundreds of trails and the natural wonder of the Red-Rock covering this landscape.

Well, that makes it simple...go west, because even Atlanta gets snow. Depending on how far you want to go, maybe Texas gulf coast, or out the southwest.

If you want to risk cold but not freezing weather in the fall, I live outside DC and it is worth seeing.

The south is close and pretty- the mountains in Tennessee are beautiful. Calfiornia has the most diverse topography and in my opinion is the most beautiful region on the planet.... that would certainly be a rodad trip!
