My period has always fluctuated by a few days, but I know about the week that it's supposed to start, and I always keep "supplies" on hand.
It is not That sudden. There's no walking around, trailing blood without knowing it, or anything. There's a feeling that women experience, close to the feeling that you need to pee, or that you have warm water inside, or even just a trickling feeling. It can be a combination of all of the above, and the feeling comes when the blood is still a couple inches away. Also, the blood starts (for me) slowly, peaking a day later for two days, and then gradually goes away again, for a total of about 5 days. From the first time that I feel that Feeling that it's started, I know I have about 45 mins to get to a restroom.
Keep in mind, it's different for everyone. :-)

Do you mean the first time? Your first period is always very little. Some might not even get any blood on their underwear. But after that, your period comes about every 28 days, so girls just count 4 weeks out and wear a pantyliner or pad when they know it's going to come. It doen't just all come out at once. Periods last for about 5 days for most women. So while girls are in public their menstrual flow just keeps on flowing, even while their swimming. So they just wear a pad or a tampon.

when it first starts, it's not very heavy, so usually they won't have trouble in public. Girls can tell because it comes around the same time evry month, so they know to watch out for it. For some, they know they're starting because they have some mild cramping then see a tiny bit of blood when they pee, so they know to wear a pad.

We feel the change in our bodies, like somethings different. We cant stop it from happening, when it happens, we just have to make sure we are prepared for it. And no, its not like it flows like a river, it starts out light and gets heavy.

A lot of girls may not know when they are about to start. It is a worry that they will be embarrassed by a red spot on their clothes. Some girls will wear a pantiliner when they expect their period. It gives them peace of mind.
