Actually, you can get by doing floor work like crunches. Just remember that you have to hit your abs from all sides i.e. upper, lower, obliques. And don't forget your lower back. It's what helps pull you abs in to give that flat appearance. However, none of this means anything unless you focus on a low fat diet. Everyone has the potential for a 6 pack. It's just that it hids under varing degrees of fat. And on a man, that's the last place fat melts off. Focus on a low fat diet and plenty of fat burning/cardio workouts and not just abs.

Some people store too much fat under the skin in the mid section to obtain a six pack. It's genetics. Weight train your core(abs, etc) just like any other muscle. You still need to shape those muscles just like you would a bicep or anything else.
