1. convert both to improper fractions
2. find the least common denominator
3. multiply both fractions by (x/x) to make the denominator of each the LCD.
4. subtract the numerators, put the difference over the new LCD.
5. reduce the fraction
6. re-convert to mixed numeral
1. 61/8 - 13/3
2. LCD is 24
3. (61/8)*(3/3) - (13/3) *(8/8)
(183/14) - (104/24)
4. (183-104)/24
79/24
5. this fraction cannot be reduced
6. 3 7/24

First, convert these expressions into fractions.
7 5/8 -- multiply the denominator by the whole number and then add the numerator (8 X 7 + 5), making this the new numerator --61/8
3 4/3 -- do the same (3 X 3 + 4) -- 13/3
Now your problem is 61/8 - 13/3. Find the lowest common denominator that 8 and 3 will both divide into evenly. This turns out to be 24 (8 X 3). Then multiply the numerators by whatever number you had to multiply the denominators 8 and 3 by to get 24.
61 X 3/24 - 13 X 8/24 = 183/24 - 104/24 = 79/24
Since 79 is prime (divisible by only 1 and itself), this answer cannot be reduced to any lower terms.

There are a number of ways to solve this problem, but here is how I would do it:
First, covert the mixed numbers to improper fractions:
7 5/8 = ((7 x 8) + 5)/8 = (56 + 5)/8 = 61/8
3 4/3 = ((3 x 3) + 4)/3 = (9 + 4)/3 = 13/3
Second, find a common denominator and change the improprer factions accordingly. In this case, the common denominator is 24.
61/8 = (61 x 3)/(8 x 3) = 183/24
13/3 = (13 x 8)/(3 x 8) = 104/24
Third, subtract the numerators (which we can now do since both fractions now have the same denominator) and put the result over the common denominator, 24.
183 - 104 = 79
79/24
Last, express the fraction in simpliest form and as a mixed number.
79/24 = 3 7/24
The answer is 3 7/24.

You need to get the fractions to have the same denominator. The lowest common denominator for 8 and 3 would be 24.
Turn 3 4/3 into 4 1/3, right? Now you need to get both fractions over 24. 7 15/24 - 4 8/24 = 3 7/24.
I haven't done this in a long time, but I think this is right. It's good that you ask "how" to get the answer instead of just asking for the answer, because once you understand how to do this, you can do it with any problem.

Have to bring both numbers to a common denominator.
7 5/8 = 56/8 + 5/8 = 61/8
3 3/4 = 12/4 + 3/4 = 15/4 x 2/2 = 30/8
61/8 - 30/8 = 31/8 = 24/8 + 7/8 = 3 7/8

The number 7 can be written as 56/8. Add this to 5/8 to get 61/8.
The number 3 can be written as 9/3. Add this to 4/3 to get 13/3.
You now have the expression 61/8 - 13/3.
To subtract, you need the denominators of the fractions to be the same. A common multiple of 8 and 3 is 24, so use 24 as the common denominator.
Multiply the numerator and denominator of 61/8 by 3 to get 183/24. Then multiply the numerator and denominator of 13/3 by 8 to get 104/24.
Now you can subtract 183/24 - 104/24 to get 79/24. Divide 79 by 24 to find that it goes in 3 times with 7 left over. Write this as 3 7/24.

First, change both terms to fractions.
7 and 5/8 = 61/8
3 and 4/3 = 13/3
Now get your fractions into lowest common denominators.
61/8 * 3/3 = 183/24
13/3 * 8/8 = 104/24
183/24 - 104/24 = 79/24, which is the same as 3 and 7/24.

3 4/3 ? that's an improper fraction. 3 4/3 = 4 1/3.
now it's 7 5/8 + 4 1/3. you have to convert each fraction so they have a common denominator (like 24, for instance).... then they will be easy to add...

assuming you mean 7*5/8 - 3*4/3:
use the PEMDAS and multiply within each subsystem (so 7*5/8 and then do 3*4/3) and then subtract (remember Least Common Denominator!)
your answer should be 3/8.
good luck!
