We never use the 4WD feature on our 2000 Suburban, yet recently this message started to display on the message center, "Service 4WD". Does this really mean it's broken? Or is it programmed to come on every 90,000 miles by default? Is there anything I can do to make this go away if it's not really broken?

Take it to the dealer. It needs attention. Although you don't use 4WD, power is still transmitted through the transfer case at all times to the rear wheels. It does require periodic service, whether you use 4WD or not. Also, the drive components in front are always turning whether you are in 2WD or 4WD and that all needs periodic service as well.
