Of course but unlike the gray eminence of Cardinal Richelieu, it is spread over corporations. Do you think that the oil companies, Dupont, Bell, Lochheed, Halliburton, Boeing and others might just put pressure on the White House and Congress for their own good. Why do they need lobbies to support their interest if they already have elected representatives in Washington? The generals and admirals shake swords to justify their being, and the FBI and Homeland Security cry wolf to expand their budgets but the real puppeteers are in the financial centers of the US and perhaps even the world. With our trade deficit with Japan, do you think that Bush will heed their cry during the recent North Korean threat? The Japanese have substantial investments in the US and control major corporations...what do you think?

Of course, it is the bureaucracy that actually runs the country. This is found in all departments and consists of people who, while they may be very good at their jobs, also have the goal of preserving those jobs by influencing policy that maintains their importance. These are the people who write the papers that the Congress and the President use to make decisions. They research and guide the judges in their decisions. They are the most powerful people in the government.
