I have lived my life with the old adage, "Neither a borrower nor a Leander be." When you loan money think of it as a gift, if you get it back wonderful, it speaks of their character. If you don't get it back write it off as a lesson learned and it to speaks of their character. If you need this money than tell them you know they are having it difficult but that you can't afford to just give that amount away that you need a time frame when you will get it back. Work with them suggest a hundred a month for five months or whatever works for both of you. If their friendship is worth more than the money say nothing and see what they do, this will tell you what kind of a friend they truly are, a user and abuser of friends or a friend worth holding onto.

Just talk to him like you did in this question. Acknowledge that you know he is having problems but make it clear that that much money is a big deal in your life as well. If he is really your friend then he will at the very least offer to start making regular payments to pay you back. One piece of advice for the future....If a friend or relative needs money, only give it to them expecting to never get it back.

You should say, I'm going through financial troubles. When do you think you think I can get that money back. If you are open to it, offer a payment plan... $50 every two weeks is fair. Pull him aside from other people or do it over the phone. Be direct. Don't allow him to take further advantage.

What possessed you to loan money to a friend? Now he will avoid you because he can't pay you back, and you will feel bad if & when you ask for it back.
Never loan money to friends or relatives. If you can't afford to give them the money as a gift and forget about ever giving it back, don't give it to them. More friendships and family relationships are destroyed over loans than you can count.

Firstly, I am one that doesnt get into lending or borrowing because I dont want to be in a situation like this one. Secondly, I would just ask for it BUT realize, that there is a reason that he's in the financial situation. I would suggest that you chalk it up as a learning experience if you dont get it. I know for me, my friends and family get very frustrated because I never lend and borrow EVER. I dont care how sad the story is or how dire the situation is because I dont want to chase people to get whats mine back. I dont have time for it.

You ask him the same way he asked you. 500$ is a lot of money to borrow without knowing when you're going to get it back. I know how you feel about asking, but if you want it back you have to ask, it's yours and it belongs to you. you need it back, so you'll have to ask. Wish you the best of luck. If you don't ask now, people will start to walk over you thinking they don't have to pay you back because you'll be too scared to ask for it back. TRUST ME!

Never lend a friend money, no matter how down in the hole they are. It can lead to a lost friend. He put you on the spot by asking for it in the first place.

Say, "Let's make a plan for how you're going to pay me back. I have thus and so bills coming up, and I need to know your plans so I can plan."
Have a piece of paper and a pen handy so you can both write it out and sign it.
Then if he doesnt pay you back, you can take him to small claims court.

Just ask him straight out. He doesn't want you to ask him, but you need to. If he's a friend he would have already paid you back, or at least given you an update (I'll pay you next paycheck). Hint, hint, hint.

the way you asked here is just fine...now go say it to your friend. If it would make you feel better say somethiing like...I hate to bother you but I'm in need of that money I loaned to you. I'm going to need you to repay me and very soon.
