The first World Cup was in 1930. It was staged in Uruguay.and was won by Uruguay. England didn't participate because they believed the World Cup was fully representative of world football. England didn't play in the World Cup until 1950. England was knocked out of the competition by a squad of U.S. part timers 1-0. The World Cup that the teams are playing for is not the original . The first cup was the Jules Rimet Trophy. That cup was retired when Brazil won it's third World Cup Championship. When the next nation wins the present World Cup three times they will retire that trophy as well.

Uruguay, 1932. England didn't go. I think the FA thought a tournament in Uruguay too low class for them. But they weren't alone, most european countries declined the invitation. Hungary went and I think France as Jules Rimet came up with the idea.
