Where is it that you live?? Maybe loss of habitat in your area has caused them to leave for better places where more food can be found....if there was a swamp in your area that was filled in it could cause the insect population to drop and since insects are thier food of choice maybe there isnt enough anymore. I dont think that any type of animal can be banned from living where it wants but I am fairly certain that human interference is probably what caused them to leave the area in which you live.

They haven't gone anywhere. Here at my house you can hear them all the time. I love it. Where do you live? I am located in Middle Tennessee and there are plenty of whippoorwills here. I hope this helps.

I still hear them at my house. Everynight around sunset it's like a symphony of whippoorwills. It's peaceful. They usually quit after 30 min.

I have heard them in Arkansas. Never saw one. Saw a pair of the large Woody Woodpeckers there. They broke my window, pecking at a reflection of a tree. LOL. I have seen more diff. birds there than anywhere I've been. Many states.
