First, it's not always the truth that rich uneducated people are more respected than poor educated people, although I do think that that's the majority of the country.
I was born and raised in New York City, and back then, there was a very strong arts/intellectual culture that seemed valued. "Exposing" your children to culture was and still is a strong value. Even the rich people I knew were very educated to the point that I actually linked the two. They treated money as a means to access and enjoy culture- but not as an end in itself.
I didn't experience true crass materialism until I went away to college in New York state. There, I ran into "car people", women and men who valued and even described others by their car. I met affluent children who knew nothing about anything - not even popular culture. It was a huge shock and admittedly a disapointment, since I had hoped college would be a hotbed of intellectual debate.
Admittedly, NYC has become much more of a materialistic place, and the old fervent hotbeds of thought have rapidly retreated across the East River to the new Left Bank of Brooklyn, but in general, New Yorkers seem to pride themselves on how much they know, not just how much they have.

Rich people are respected before of their money (whether right or wrong). Their work ethic (assuming, its not from an inhertiance) and smarts to get them to that point is to be admired.
Educated people gain more respect because they are simply more knowledgable in more areas than uneducated. This is not to say that someone without a formal education is stupid, as street smarts does account for something. But in the world of mechincal complexities someone who is not trained in the field would have trouble maintaining a conversation.
Thus knowledge=respect.

It has and will always be about the money. If your rich and have little education people do not care as long as your able to pay cash for everything you want.If your poor but have a great education you will be treated as dirt under the feet of the rich uneducated people.
My own family treat me as if I were the plague because I am not well off.We live week to week on my husbands salary. We are both educated people but just can't get a break.I do not work because out of my mom's 6 kids I am the only one who will take care of her.She is disabled and needs care 24/7.

Although there are a lot of rich people out there who are smart, there are an equally porportionate number of rich numb-skulls as well. This also goes for poor people, there are very smart ones, and knucleheads as well. When it comes down to the rich uneducated people vs. the poor educated people, it is as the saying goes, money talks.

I don't think that's exactly true. I think most rich people are educated, that's how they became rich.
Then you've got actors/musicians...I don't think they're really respected, just envied.
Then you've got Paris Hilton,etc...She's definitely not respected, totally envied and just plain amusing. Either way, Paris Hilton is A HILTON, I'm sure her education was nowhere near as poor as she makes it seem.
Poor educated people aren't respected, I believe, because the US as a whole places very little value on education. We don't care if people are smart so long as they're beautiful and have better stuff than we do.
I hope it changes in my lifetime.

Isn't that f*cked up?!? It seems that money is everything these days. The world is focused on million dollar celebrities who sing or act for a living and of course there is Paris Hilton who is completely air headed, has no talent, does absolutely nothing and is a millionaire! What about doctors who save lives? Why is it that singers and actors make so much money when doctors spend their whole lives becoming educated and are saving lives and don't even make half as much? The world is f*cked up!

People who have money tend to get more respect because we live in a Capitalistic society where money unfortunately matters a great deal. Power equates to a level of respect. Money is a source of power. Education doesn't tend to go as far.

because a lotta people are superficial and believe that money is the ticket to anything. those who respect the uneducated rich are also uneducated themselves because they do think money is better than education. i guess that's what humanity has come to....money conquers knowledge.
