When the military first started testing parachutes, they found that many people would temporarily black out right after jumping from the plane. This was pretty dangerous, but they found that if you yell loudly when you jump it counteracts it.
One of the first test groups to try it had trouble deciding what to yell. They had just seen the movie "Geronimo" the previous night at the base theater, and thought they could yell that. It stuck.
