It was first identified as a 'web log' which is a journal written for all to see [or only those of your choosing] on the web. Like everything else in the world, it was shortened to 'blog'. Not a dumb question, I had to find out myself too.

Blog is short for web log. It is basically an online journal. You can add entries with text and pictures.

It is a weblog, a web site generated by a script that orders and maintains entries in a chronological order (usually newest to oldest)
