I thought it was five seconds too. But it depends on the floor...and the food. I mean, if you drop a sandwich on the floor it's a little different than dropping an m&m.

lol - I saw an episode on this on Mythbusters & the determination was that if it's something hard, like an M&M or a piece of candy it's okay to eat it - nothing "stuck to it" to grow germs. But if it was something soft, porous, wet, or with a lot of surfaces for stuff to stick to, it could pick up germs (including e-coli & helicobactor) & you should not eat it, not even if it's only three seconds!!!!! So there you have it - proven by the dudes on Mythbusters!!

The Mythbusters tested this rule and it turned out to have more to do with the type of food being dropped than the amount of time.

I don't care how long it has beed dropped for but it depends where it was dropped. Odds are, if it was dropped at my house, or my grandmother's house, or something like that, I'll eat it anyway, even if it was dropped on the ground. I don't really care. Unless my dogs get to it before me.

3 seconds??...heck, I thought it was ten. Depends on the floors. If the floors were gross, nope. Otherwise...sure.

no, but kids do...some will overlook the rule if it's been longer than 3 seconds, depending on what it is

No. It goes on the floor and the dog gets it, not me.
