That's why you ask for a doggy bag, lol ... you don't want to admit that you haven't got a dog and that it's actually for the babysitter, do you ... er ... ok. Don't have a baby either ... I know ... my freezer is empty and it's more efficient when it's full :) How about that?
Edit: OMG a 'to go box'!!! how cutely American and 'pre-school talk' is that ... I bet you 'go potty' when going to the loo, too!

Many people eat everything they can get their hands on- - - - - and it sure does show. However, restaurants always serve much more food than many will eat, those who are concerned about their health, appearance, and pride.
Those people ( the slim ones) take part of their meal home to provide the second meal at no extra price. My wife and I have often taken home more than half of our restaurant meal.
Restaurants will never serve half the amount of food for half the price for a couple of reasons 1. The big "tubs" want gobs of chow, they never get enough. 2. It takes the same amount of time to serve a small meal, the same amount of time is taken up at the table. 3. The extra amount of food does not cost the restaurant very much, but they would only take in half as much money. 70 or 75 % less profit.

A "doggy bag" is a name given a good many years ago for leftovers from your order of food at a restaurant in which you would give to your dog. Now people ask for it with other names.

I can never finish a meal in a restaurant. My gran used to tell me to ask for a doggy bag, but I was always too embarrassed. Now I have moved to Canada it seems that everyone does it! Although I don't actually call it a 'doggy bag' to the waiter I just say can I have the rest to go please!!! I still call it a doggy bag to everyone else though!
And yes, originally it was so people could give it to their dogs. Gran used to come home with all sorts in her bag to give to her dog. He loved it!!

I think you answered your own question.....?
The term doggy bag is derived from the idea of taking your leftovers home to feed to the dog. Often times people are just taking it home to put in the fridge and eat later...but they still say doggy bag because it is the common expression.

The portion sizes in restaurants are HUGE! When don't you need a "doggy bag" aka to go box. I guess the reason you are asking that question is you can eat ALL that food and never need a to go box. (?)

i never ask for a doggy bag. it seems just too obvious, and greedy. no, siree. what i do is i always sneak the food into my pockets when no-one is looking. it can be a bit messy if i'm having say, spaghetti, or soup, but i simply will not be thought of as greedy. what do you take me for?
