not sure if you are already, but you may want to familiarize yourself with the contraversial works of William Reich - who "discovered" a mysterious naturally occuring cosmic energy source called "Orgone". he therorized that you could construct a collector using alternaiting layers of reflective metal within organic shields and harness its incredible power to cure cancer among other things. Reich also developed a "cloudbuster" for seeding rain clouds (which was the basis of a Kate Bush video from several years back).
A lot of skeptics have attemted to discredit Reich over the years. But a lot of people fervently believe in his work. With what you are working on his studies could be something you might find interesting.
EDIT:
ps - as far as finding a zinc rod, they are used commonly for electroplating (ie chrome finishing) so check your yellow pages.

Look-up Patented Creations.com, or Metallica, type shops, or anything to do with sheet medals, of any types... try to think up the best fitting word, that affiliates with zinc, and look in the yellow pages on this site, yahoo. Good-Luck!! I have an invention I would love to have the funds, to get it made and to sell, and then patented! I just know it will sell !!! I cant tell what it is, but I'll give u a clue...... Its for hot uncomfortable footed-people, all over our Globe!! Some folks even have hot feet in the middle of winter!! I dont think our feet were made to wear closed shoes,period... okay, I've said enough!! Have fun with your invention, I'll say a prayer for you that its so original, that it will definately sell, and make you rich, from it !!! Hows' that? God-Speed, to you my friend.......
