Only removing programs that run in the background (processes) will speed up your computer. Cntrl-Alt-Delete in Windows XP will allow you to see all of the processes in the task manager. Check the "performance" tab, if the Physical Memory (k) available is under 150,000... you might want to consider upgrading to more RAM. If the CPU is always running at %100... you might consider a new computer (or new processor/mobo, etc, but something tells me you're not going to do that).

Hope that helps.

Common programs that people run that eat up system memory:
AOL
Instant messengers
Uncessesary Anti-spyware duplicates (you only need one)

To some extent, yes it will. There are two things you need to be aware of: How much space the programs are taking up and how active those programs are in the background.

If you're struggling for space on your hard drive you should definitely consider uninstalling a few programs, especially ones you don't need or use often.

Also, keep an eye on your System Tray (it's default location is on your taskbar in the bottom right). This is where most of the programs that run in the background live. Things like WinAmp Agent, or the Quicktime tray, you can easily configure to not load at startup. You probably don't need to delete them though.

Just go to your Control Panel and open the Add/Remove Software wizard. If you're using XP it'll give you a rundown of how often certain programs are being used. You might also what to look at what kinds of programs you have installed. You might have multiple programs that perform the same function. For example, you might not need RealPlayer for DVDs if Windows Media Player works fine for you.

Turning off your TSR programs (Termininate and Stay Resident) will help. These are the programs that all load at the boot but are not used immediately. They "reside" in RAM and constantly "poll" the system, kinda like.."Hey, coach, I'm ready to play, put me in". The ones that become instantly active when you click on the icons. Go thru your START menu and locate the ones you don't use that often, remove them from the Start menu and you'll see a small improvement. Another way is to Defrag regularily. After you've used a program a number of times or played a game for an hour or so, it's files get scattered on the h/d. defragging puts all parts of a program back into one contiguous sector of the h/d, faster for the PC to call that part of the program.

Removing programs will not speed up your computer unless of course they are actually being used by the system. Use a startup manager to determine what your computer is loading at the time of boot and remove what you do not absolutely need. Taht will speed up your computer leaving the programs available for use when you do actually want to use them. Auto updaters are an example of what can be removed. You can update your software manually when you have a mind to.

If they run in the back groung then yes it would. But any programs you don't use or don't anticipate using, deleting them frees up memory on your hard drive. Use either the programs uninstall, or under control panel in add/ delete programs.

If your PC has been sluggish you might want to delete your internet files/ cookies, as well as download, and use, an anti spyware program like ad awre se personal from www.lavasoft.com, it's free! Aslo run your disk clean up regularl;y as well as defragment your drive, both found under system tool in the start menu, if you have windows that is.
