Sounds to me like it was an accident. I would first try to find out if the person with the fireworks were inebriated at the time or he was handling the fireworks in an unsafe manner, if so then he is most definitely responsible for the damage caused and can be held responsible for the damages. If he wasn't either, then he is still responsible for damages, but it would be up to a court to decide just exactly how much.
I really hope everyone had some good homeowners insurance.
As for forgiving, accidents do happen, and whether you can forgive and forget is entirely up to you.
