I did. You can report to Ebay fraud customer service. If you had paid it with credit card, you may be able to talk to your credit card company and get your money back. But since you paid it by check, I am not sure if you can get any money back.

the police will do nothing
but if you paid with paypal you may be able to get a refund from them
ebay can find out the information the seller has entered and not give it to you but use a 3rd party resolution company to find out what they can do to catch this crook
if you sent the a real cheque like you alluded to then its a bank fraud business type transaction and your ban kand his may be able to resolve it but probably not
get as much info as you can and be very careful about your ebay dealings
i would email ebay and as their advice or you can contact your local fraud department of the police station for some steps to take but they wont actually do anything other than give you advice

I have never been ripped off on e-bay, however it may be because I'm extremely careful and I usually buy from buyers with excellent ratings. Be sure to check on the sellers reputation before buying, however sometimes I'll give a new seller a shot and so far I've never had a problem that wasn't resolved.

She can file a claim with eBay and with PayPal if she paid that way. She is about to run out of time. She can file several different ways. Tell her to ask your same question on the Answer Center under Communites at Ebay and they can direct her where to go....
