What the hell is wrong with that guy? When I saw that on T.V. I had just gotten back from a mission trip from a poor town in Mexico. This town seriously had nothing. And I'm thinking the whole time I'm watching it "There's a little town in southern Mexico who's lives would improve 100% if you gave them just 1 million dollars, but you give billions of dollars to a guy who is already the richest man in the world". That is just wrong.

Actually, when you have all the information, you might applaud Warren Buffet's actions. And if you send the name of that village to the 5 foundations that are getting a lot of Buffet's money, I am willing to bet one of them may have a way to help that community.

Here's the deal:

Buffet gave a substantial portion of his money to 4 foundations he and his family have already established. These foundations largely focus on various social and public health issues - including sex education, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, and abortion rights. Not everyone agrees with these issues, of course, but these are causes that Buffet at least thinks deserve support and so he has put his money where his mouth is.

The Gates foundation works on some parallel projects, particularly prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, and funding the development of medicines or vaccines for such diseases. Eventually they hope that good treatments or vaccines will result, and then the money can be used to help get the medicines used despite the poverty that today limits access for millions.

Buffet was very clever in how he went about this. He insisted that the money he donates actually be USED, rather than piling up in bank accounts earning interest.

And he chose the Gates foundation for some intelligent reasons.

First, Bill Gates is leaving the management of Microsoft to take personal part in running the foundation. That means there will be good leadership and one of the world's top minds applied to this work. Gates doesn't ned to take a huge salary to run it, either.

Second, Buffet figured out that administering a philanthropic organization is not one of his strengths. He believes this is a skill that Gates has, and he would rather someone that influential, smart and capable have the job of using the money effectively.

If you think about this a minute, there's something astonishing to be realized. Between them, TWO people - Warren Buffet and Bill Gates - are putting MORE money into some of the world's most desperate problems than ALL the governments of the world combined have done so far.

This is an historic and very, very important combination. And it just might for once even SOLVE some of the problems that ultimately threaten or diminish us all.

Wow, good for you for following partial bits and pieces of the news and jumping to conclusions based on that.
Bill and Melinda Gates have the largest charity fund in the world. Bill Gates has just recently announced he is going to retire and devote his whole time doing charity work. Both he and Warren Buffet had announced many times that they will not die with all their money but give it away to Charity before they die. They are close Friends so Warren Buffet trusts Bill Gates will all those billions and knows that he will do a good job in distributing the money to people who need it.

I do agree it's sick that some people have so much money. But at least they are doind something about it and not passing it on to next generations of lazy spoiled kids who will spend it on drugs or something.

He didn't give his money to Bill Gates the person, but rather to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, a charitable institution. The purpose of which is to pool resources so they could make a larger impact on selected world problems. With this mega fund, they will be able to finance water purification systems and energy projects for regions where people have never known clean water or electricity. They can finance the cultivation of millions of acres of agriculture to feed millions of people forever. Much better than dropping emergency food from airplanes. They can educate masses of children, train hundreds of thousands of workers to build millions of homes, miles and miles of roads. worldwide.

I think their work is a noble undertaking and I look forward to seeing some real improvements to world poverty in the future. If more rich people would do the same thing, the world would be a much better place to live.

We also need an army of missionaries, like yourself, who will give their time and energies to visit poor countries and bring back a wish list of needed improvements.

Well, Buffet gave it to the Foundation which gives poor schools in the US the same expensive computer equipment that private schools have, has programs for health in poorer countries, among other things, so they probably will help poor kids in Mexico. And really, if he just gave a million dollars to a ton in Mexico, do you think the corrupt government is going to use it for the betterment of that town? I doubt it.

Warren Buffet did not give his money to Bill Gates he gave it to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation which is a charity that helps people like those people you mentioned in Mexico. The foundation use its large amounts of cash to solve global problems such as the lack of vaccines for children in Africa. its not like Mr. Buffet just wrote a check to Bill and said have fun.

He gave his money to a foundation that Bill and Malinda Gate started and are very active in, along with Bono. Last night Buffet and the Gates were on Charlie Rose talking about their vision to help and give back to the world.

Um, i wonder more about whats wrong with you? This "guy" gave his money to the number one philanthorpic organization in the world. It will fund treatement and development for cures for AIDS, and will help schools and treatments for the sick in africa.

Im sure this "little town" you visited is not the only one of its kind. If you feel so strongly about it, YOU give YOUR money to help them. Set up a collection box and start washing cars. then send your money to that little town and watch it be demolished. If it was "fixed up" the other little towns would get jealous and vandalize everything. The cure is not to help the little towns, but the help the ENTIRE GOVERNMENT.

you dont know alot about politics do ya?

I agree with you totally. I am glad you did mission work in southern Mexico. I am sure you had a big impact on those peoples lives even though you did not have a million dollars.

He gave it to his charity, not to him directly. You need to get your news from Robin.
