Cognitive dissonance as I understand, the way Festinger presented it, is that it is a lack of balance in our perception and what is happening in the reality (or our cognition vs. our behavior). For example, we think or perceive that there is no terrorism in the world, but in the reality what are those bombings and the likes? This may be an absurd example but it is how cognitive dissonance is clearly shown. Moreover, in Social Psychology, as a part of Modern Psychology - it does fuel but not the entirety. It fuels the study since it is a part of an "attitude formation" and in modern psychology, we would want to study behavior empirically as we can. Going back, how does cognitive dissonance affect in the attitude formation? It is in the sense that any people doesn't want to experience the feeling of having a cognitive dissonance, it is an uncomfortable situation. However, there are things or ways to prevent or compensate cognitive dissonances. First, try to add new ideas or cognition to the behavior. Second, change the behavior to be more in line with one's belief. And lastly, one may seek new information that would support one's belief. =)

That is a very interesting question. I think that it does not fuel psychology as a whole, because that would include parts of it that have nothing really to do with dissonance. It think that it does fuel psychological research in alot of ways. Without dissonance there would really be nothing new to research and we would thus be stuck with the current research and nothing new at all. Modern psycology has branched so far out into society that it has really become a permanent fixture in our way of life. Thus the fuel of modern psychology is its integration into modern society and the fact that it feeds off of the many aspects that make modern society what it is. One of those small parts is cognitive dissonance, but it is not the whole of the fuel by any means.

Which psychological theory are you referring to? The problem with your question is that it is generalized to all of psychology. Psychology has over 200 theories and not all of them are concerned about cognitive awareness or belief systems...check out Hakomi it places a greater emphasis the feeling aspect of the body experience.

Herbert Mullin turned right into a serial killer for the time of and after the Vietnam conflict. He killed because he believed the blood of his victims might want to steer away from a large earthquake that would deliver California sliding into the sea. in the course of the total time he became killing, no such earthquake befell. through the classic of evidence the theists use, he might want to be considered best in his fact.
