Male pattern baldness is a sex linked trait (meaning it is contained on the X chromosome). Since males inherit the Y chromosome from their fathers, the X chromosome comes from the mother, and if the X chromosome she passes to her son happens to contain the defective form of the gene controlling male pattern baldness...
...well, I hear Rogaine for men works well...
...basically the long and the short of it is that if your mother had brothers or a father with male pattern baldness...there is AT LEAST a 50% chance you will have the condition...

Baldness comes from the mother's side. If her father, grandfather or brothers are/were bald, you probably will be too.
