Well, there are 2 kinds of screws that are most frequent, really, the old fashioned straight slot, and the newer "phillips" skrews and skrew drivers. And of course they vary in size. The phillips was invented as a substitute for the old ones, as it's much better to use for 99.9% of the jobs.
Also you do get other kinds of screws though, for different purposes, like square holed ones, ones with octogonal holes and some with no holes at all. Many screws are custom-made for a specific use, such as the ones on your car and your computer, so they'll use the form which suits it best etc.
Though it would be nice if they could reduce it, wouldn't it?

Everyone has a different idea of the best screw head.
A funny example, I went to change a headlight bulb on my car. This two minute job required three types of screwdrivers, a Phillips, a Torx and a flat blade.
It is a good thing I didn't have to do a big job.

Because there are thousands of different materials and types of screw that are needed for various types of jobs. There are different threads on them and different heads and things of that nature. Though they all look very similar, they are different in many ways. There are not only different types of threading but different widths of threading as well.
As far as different screwdrivers, there is a screwdriver for every type of screw head out there. After all, if there wasn't, how would you use the screws that are out there?
