Do not get a pet based on some Internet communities opinion, PLEASE. There is lots to consider when aquiring a pet.
Do you have a house?
Do you have a yard?
Are you a very busy person outside the house or can you spend lots of time with the pet?
How much pet can you afford? Dogs and cats are relatively cheap and easy to keep, exotic pets, like ferrets or monkeys are not.
Do you have access to the different kinds of pet food required?
Do you have access to a vet? Do you have the money for vet care above and beyond shots and check ups?
Do you want a very interactive pet, like a dog or something a little less dependend on your interaction like fish or finches?
Do you want a big or a little pet? Does it have to be a quiet one?
See, there are so many things to consider. Way too many to let some people online decide what kind of pet you should get. We do not know your situation only you do. And also, please do not get a pet because you think it's COOL and without getting information about all aspects of the pet first. The coolness will wear off after you had to scrub the carpet a time or two or after you been bit by your pet a few times and then what?
Pets do depend on us for everything and they deserve the best care we can give them. So please look deep inside yourself and make that decision. And since I do not hardly believe that you live all alone, please involve your family as well, since they will have to live under the same room with your decision.
Good luck to you and what ever pet you end up going for, I hope you two can enjoy each others company for a long time to come.

PS: Once you've made up your mind you might want to think about adopting one. You'll be getting a great pet and you'll be giving an unwanted animal a forever home. Think about it. Now THAT's cool.
Maybe you can volunteer at an animal shelter for a while. It might help you make up your mind. If not, read ......read ......read, books, internet, anything.

I think tortoises are the coolest pets, but they can get pretty big and live almost forever, so it takes a big commitment. Hedgehogs are also really cool pets, very cute, they are nocturnal, though. Whatever kind of pet you get, please get it from a pet rescue instead of a pet store. It will be healthier, and you will be giving a home to an animal that wouldn't have had one otherwise. petfinder.com has a listing of adoptable pets at rescues, you might want to look there.

If you want a pet so that it's cool, don't get one. You get a pet if you love it and you can provide dedication, health care, responsibility, suitable home, provisions for when you are away, etc.

Ferrets rawk, but they are a lot of work, very clever and require a lot of attention. If you're considering a ferret, get a book on them first. Again if you consider getting one, think about adopting a rescue ferret, petfinders.com has several on there.

Good luck
