Photos from the 1950s sports pictures show much slimmer people, and they still had gyms to work out in. It can't be that everyone's on steroids, right? But you don't see 300-lb football players in 1950s photos.

I wouldn't say steroids. It has to do with the fact that players are now being bred to grow up playing sports. Football players are conditioned and trained from grade-school through-out their entire life to be faster stronger and smarter. This goes for any sport. The conditioning regimen for high school nowadays includes two-a-days (two practices in one day) for 2 weeks in the middle of July (hottest month of the year). You think they put 15 year olds through that 50 years ago? Even in gradeschool now, they are doing two-a-days. They are being groomed to play football from ages 6 or so on up

It's all the chemicals (including the steroids) that are pumping into the food we eat now-a-days. It's making people grow bigger (the average shoe size "back then" was like 6 or something I once read. Now, my daughter is 9, is the tallest kid in her class and wears a womens' size 7 shoe already. Kids are developing into puberty at much earlier ages because of it too.

The FDA released a study about a year ago citing the use of growth hormones in foods as the main reason our entire society is getting bigger Add to that scientific workout routines, and the use of illegal substances like steroids & HGH & there's your answer.

Today's lifting and conditioning tactics are much better than ones in the early days of football.
