I'm going to avoid the fantasy genre all together, considering that Maile Meloy is straight up fiction, good fiction, mind you, but it's not fantasy.
How about The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera
Tomas is a physician whose fear of women drives him through an endless series of affairs, even after he falls in love with and marries Tereza. Sabina, a free spirit who often sleeps with Tomas, has a "heavier" male partner in Franz as well. Their emotions and activities play out against the Communist dictatorship and Prague Spring, into which Tomas is reluctantly drawn.
OR
The Amateur Marriage by Anne Tyler
Michael and Pauline seemed like the perfect couple - young, good-looking, made for each other. The moment she walked into his mother's grocery store in Baltimore, he was smitten, and in the heat of World War II fervour, they marry in haste. From the sound of the cash register in the old grocery to the counterculture jargon of the sixties, from the miniskirts to the multilayers of later years, Anne Tyler captures the nuances of everyday life with telling precision and sly humour.
OR off the beaten track try:
Four Souls by Louise Erdrich
Begins with Fleur Pillager's journey from North Dakota to Minneapolis, where she plans to avenge the loss of her family's land to a white man. After a dream vision that gives her a powerful new name, Four Souls, she enters the household of John James Mauser. A man notorious for his wealth and his mansion on a hill, Mauser became rich by deceiving young Indian women and taking possession of their ancestral lands. What promises to be a straightforward tale of revenge, however, slowly metamorphoses into a more complex evocation of human nature. The story of anger and retribution that begins in Tracks becomes a story of healing and love in Four Souls.

Julia Glass is a great author, she has a new book out (The Whole World Over) and her other book in paperback (Three Junes) was wonderful and made me cry. Jodi Picoult is also great, check out any of her books, she writes fiction with interesting moral dilemmas. I read about a book a day, so if I was to list everything I read and loved, the list would be never ending! But these are good starts! Happy reading! =D

You should read Twilight -by Stephenie Meyer. Everyone that i know that has read Twilight said that it was the best book they've read. its thrilling, suspenseful, there's some romance, its the first book of a series, and once you start reading it you wont want to put it down.
Also there's A Great and Terrible Beauty -by Libba Bray. I found it very interesting and the sequel to it Rebel Angels is good.
Those three books are really good and they are a must read especially Twilight.

I had finished a French novel, translated to English, which inspired two of my favorite movies. It's called Dangerous Liaisons, but I forgot what the title is in French. It was later made into the movie with the same title starring Glenn Close and John Malchovich. Later, it became the teen movie Cruel Intentions starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and his wife Reese Witherspoon. It's an amazing book!

Amazon would recommend The Hills at Home by Nancy Clark, The Accidental by Ali Smith, and Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson. I would recommend Bread Alone by Judith Ryan Hendricks, and Book of Ruth by Jane Hamilton.
Have fun reading!

Hmmmm...depends on what you are interested in. If you are into horror, lust, and the supernatural, I recommend Laurell K. Hamilton's Series "Anita Blake:Vampire Hunter". It is like a Buffy for adults. I got addicted to her series a while back and can't get enough. The series starts off a bit bland but does get very sexual towards the middle of it. She just came out with the fifteenth (?) book today and I can't wait to get it!
For the faint at heart who can't handle those, I suggest anything by Jennifer Crusie. They range from murder mystery romances, to cute funny romance stories...nothing perverse or intensely ROMANTIC, but just cute little love stories. I just finished her most recent "Anyone But You" . The main character is a woman but the story also focuses on the dog she just adopted, described as part beagle, part bloodhound, part manic depressive!:) Check out their sites below! They should have excerpts somewhere:)

I would recommend Madeline L'Engle, David Eddings, Terry Pratchett, or JK Rowlings if you like sci/fi/fantasy, or Dan Brown's books for action/adventure.
I have read all of the books by David Eddings, Dan Brown and Madeline L'Engle (which are more serious but quite enjoyable), and most of the ones by Terry Pratchett (which are really very funny).
Good luck with the summer reading!

Well, if you're up to some light, fun reading, I would reccomend "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series by Douglas Adams. I also just finished reading "The Year of Yes" by Maria Headley. They were all really fun and easy books to read if that is what you're looking for.
