In Fall, foliage changing colors is a magnificent thing to observe. The Yellows, Reds, Oranges. The tableau of color on a deciduous hillside can be breathtaking!
The season begins in early September and ends in late October, moving from the North to the south during those times. So, when you have your dates set, you can decide where to go (how far north or south) to see the best color turn.
The website in the sources: section collects data from spotters twice a week during the fall months. The data is plotted and analyzed to give you the most accurate information of the year's unique pattern. They have more than 500 spotters and cover the North Eastern States, South Eastern States and the Midwest.

Is Gatlinburg, Tennessee within the distance you want to travel? The Great Smoky Mountains are absolutely brilliant during the fall, when the leaves change. The weather is very nice at that time, and a cabin in the mountains with a view can't be beat. But you have to book ahead of time because it is a very popular place, especially in October.

I would say Vermont also. The smokies are very pretty, but the odds of you finding a place to yourself will be between slim and none....I would think another area that would be really beautiful in the fall (we were there during the summer and thought it great) is the cape Breton area in Nova Scotia.....

I'm living in New England, and let me tell you, nothing glows with Fall foliage like here. My personal favorite is to go to Vermont or New Hampshire and take a gondola ride at one of the ski resorts.

Take her at Thanksgiving or Christmas to the Island of St. Martin in the French West Indies. Stay on the French side of the island near the Alamanda Resort, or at it. Great beach, wonderful food on the island. Very romantic

Can't go wrong with leaf-peeping in New England. Do a drive through Vermont and finish your trip in Montreal!

Vermont......I lived there for 20 years, and it is the best kept secret for romantic getaways between the middle of sept and the middle of oct.
