Pushing a "walk" button on a light pole does the same thing as a single car pulling up to the light does....it trips a sensor to let the light know that someone has arrived. It then stops its normal count down between lights and goes to a 2nd count down that is shorter for traffic flow.
Pushing the button over and over again is worthless just like it is worthless to push an elevator button over and over, it will not make it go/change any faster.
If you keep pushing the start button on your lawnmower over and over again does it go faster or mow faster? no

they are not intended to change the light faster... that could cause problems.... can you imagine if anyone could change the traffic light just by pushing the button... what it does is cause the signal to switch its cycle from times of no cross traffic and let the light know it needs to change ...

The ones that are near schools where there are busy intersections turn green(walk sign appears) within less than half a minute. Ordinarlily, they do, but sometimes it takes so long that it makes one wonder.

i think that all that button does is to keep you buisy while the light takes for ever to change........
