Sounds like bad Valve guide seals. When the guide gets worn it leaks a little oil down into the cylinder when the engine sits a while...then when you start it up it throws a puff of smoke while burning off the oil. GM crate motors should be covered with a 3 year/50,000 mile warranty. Have it fixed under the factory warranty.

If the smoke is white, it is antifreeze getting into the cylinders, which suggests a broken or leaking head gasket.
If the smoke is blue, it is burning oil, ---which suggests either leaking valve guide seals or worn piston rings.
If the valve guide seals are leaking, the oil burning will ONLY be apparent for a few minutes and very heavy just a few moments after start-up.
If the piston rings are damaged or worn, the motor will always expel blue smoke when the engine is running.

Whoever installed it didn't do a clean job. Your going to have to take it to a mechanic who knows what he's doing and have him troubleshoot it. It could be an issue in the fuel delivery or a mispositioned gasket inside the motor.

if it is a new motor and the engine mostly smokes when it starts up, then it is the rings on your pistions. it was probably not broke in properly. i would say u or someone ran it hard when it was first put in. Gas engines need to be babied when installed. Diesel engines need to be worked when installed

need to re post and tell what color of smoke. blue/black...bad rings. white, water where it shouldn't be. also, i think maybe you're getting too much oil from the PVC valve into your carb. if you have one.

Blown head gasket. Smell your oil and see if it smells like antifreeze.
