Make sure that the #1 piston is on top with the exhaust stroke and the timing tab is pointed at TDC and the rotor is facing the #1 plug wire. There should be a dot that you use to line up, one on the crank and one on the cam gear. This you will need to verify with a Chilton type manual to see the diagram of how to line up these dots. Once you locate and line up, install the belt and do a test start. If the engine hiccups or farts through the intake, then you may be off a tooth, realigne and try again until the engine starts and runs.

usually there are marks on the cams, crank, and the housings for these for TDC. or, make markings yourself, right where they are...remove belt, install new belt making very sure your markings on the gears/pulleys are in the same place as before, using your markings on your gears/pulleys and their housings.
