Our neighbors tree has split and fallen over electric lines into our property. The electric company says it isn't urgent and won't come out. The local fire department says they can't help either. I have 60 feet of tree laying across my yard! The limb is still conected to her property, what can I do? She isn't home!

I have already called 911 and the fire dept came. They said since the wires weren't on the ground, they couldn't do anything. The tree is still attached about a foot above the wires, and the section of tree is about 60 to 70 feet long about 20 feet high.

Inform your nieghbor that you want the tree removed, I believe it is her responsibility. Her homeowners insurance should cover it..

Call the electric company back and escalate to a supervisor. Sometimes it's necessary to get angry and yell at somebody. Remember, "the squeekiest wheel gets the oil first" and all that.

Is it just leaning against the lines, or is it significantly pulling down on the lines? If it's pulling down on them very hard, this is a major problem that can lead to a fire on your property, igniting the tree itself, or even leading to a problem of some kind on the pole (which I've seen get ugly). Yell, yell, yell until you get through to someone who'll investigate.

That's just my humble opinion. They're just lucky it's not me, or I'd be up there in people's faces by now. heh

(Update: As an afterthought, I'm thinking the 9-1-1 suggestion may not be a bad idea either. This *is* an emergency and should be treated as such.)

If your fire department is aware of the problem and aren't concerned, then all you can do is wait for the utility company. If a bad storm came through the area, they may be tied up removing live wires off the ground. I'm sure they'll get to you soon!

relax, the tree already fell

what are the damages? if the electric line into your house is snapped, you need to calmly persuade the electric company - badgering won't help

the fire department aren't supposed to help out in things like these

who else lives with you?

if nothing is damaged, you can ask other neighbors or your own relatives to come and help.... if you're in a hurry

get the local community service to assist, maybe the church, etc

make sure to say thanks after they're done

You could hire someone to clear out the tree from your yard (or do it yourself) and then try to collect the money from your neighbor. Good luck, though. Unless your neighbor has really good character it's likely you'd have to take him to small claims court.

If the tree is leaning against power lines, how can the power company not think it's urgent? Are you sure they understand the situation? Try them again.

Call the mayor and the police. Call the electric company back every hour on the hour. Tell them you have given them notice and if anything at all ahppens to you, your home or to a visitor to your property because of that you will sue for damages.
