Most people claim to know they are right because they "believe" they are right. And, they believe they are right because their sense of self is so tied up in the drive to be always right that they cannot stand to think even for a second that they might sometimes or even oftentimes, be wrong. This, however, is not an answer to your question.

If my understanding of reality and the decisions I make based upon that understanding agree with reality and/or accomplish the desired goals that I have, then it can be said that I am right in my understanding of reality. However, is this a sufficient answer as to the question what makes right? Can a person be right if the decisions they make based upon their understanding of reality lead them to successfully slaughter hundreds of thousands of people for an objective that remains nebulous?

One can define right merely as decision-making that leads to successful attainment of a goal. Or, one can look a bit deeper at the nature of reality and choose to define right as something more. When my lover and I argue, no matter how correct my understanding of a given situation is, if she starts to cry, then I cannot be right. It may merely be that I am applying a moral conscience to the criteria to define rightness, but I choose to believe that no position is right if the harm resultant from that position is greater than the benefit. Perhaps that's a bit utilitarian... very well then, it's utilitarian. But, that is my decision to choose such values as compassion and kindness.

Unless dealing with facts (ie. this object is smaller than that object), being right or wrong is subjective. Everyone has a different experiences in life, which filters each individual's perception. So in trying to figure out if you are right, look at the perceptions of those who you want to be right to, and either prove yourself right from their point of view, or consider yourself wrong in their eyes.

How do you know anything?

You are right by agreement from others in your proximity, but how do you know it?

I have found it makes interpersonal relationships better if you are wrong and admit it and right but don't brag about it. So, you know you are right if people you know are pissed at you a lot. (Sorry, I know this isn't the joke category, but I couldn't resist.)

If you feel satisfied then u r right

if you do something for sum1z betterment, u r rite

if you do something which doesnt hurt anyone, then u r rite

sometimes what u do may be right and may hurt people, then turn to the people who u trust on their opinion.. they will guide u .. but its always better to do whats rite.. (keeps u out of trouble ;) )

I was "saved" in a tiny little church in NC several years ago. Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven. I have studied the King James bible for over twenty years and have been to more services than I can count. Pray, read your bible and God will take care of the rest. The bible says "you will know who I am because I put in the hearts of man to know who I am.

you do not know that you are right about anything. that's because you are only one person and there are billions of other people. everyone has unique ideas and beliefs. the only way to get on with life is to have faith that you are right.
