The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) offers high-performance driving events these days, where for a couple hundred dollars you can take hot laps around a race track with instruction.

If you like that, there are lots of other intermediate steps you can take, including the Solo program, road rally and rallycross.

You can also often find individual car clubs (BMW, Audi, Porsche and Corvette clubs are good bets) that rent a track for the day and charge a couple hundred dollars for you to take some laps. Google up the local clubs for popular high-performance cars in your area, and see if they have track days listed.

Most of these aren't time trials per se -- time trial is an old-fashioned word for driving against the clock one by one, sort of like qualifying for a race but without the wheel-to-wheel aspect. The SCCA used to do this in a program called Solo I, but I don't know that it's still available.

The Web site below is the SCCA's page for the Central Division-West, which includes Minnesota. Depending on how far you are from Wisconsin, you might consider driving to Elkhart Lake, WI for some time on one of North America's most historic and beautiful race courses, Road America.

All of them will let you rent time to run your car. At the going rate.
