What constitutes a "conservative" changes with time just as what defines a liberal, Republican, or Democrat.
I think I have rather good credentials as a conservative. I list them so you can understand my current position.
I was a founding member of the Conservative Party of New York State before I was old enough to vote. Even though I was only 15 years old I was elected the Vice chairman of the Queens County Conservative Party Club (the largest in the state). I was a vice chairman of Youth for Goldwater and a chairman of Young Americans for Freedom.
After college when I moved to Missouri I was elected a Republican committeeman, a member of the Republican State Committee, and chairman of the Republican City Central Committee.
I ran (unsuccessfully) for congress at the personal request of President Ronald Reagan who campaigned for me and helped me raise campaign funding.
I have managed campaigns, been a fund raiser for and a political consultant to a large number of Republican candidates and elected officials including half a dozen United States Senators and two dozen congressman.
Yet despite this history I did not vote for George Bush in either presidential election and have left the Republican Party to become a Libertarian.
George Bush and the current Republican leadership know as much about traditional Conservative principles as Jennifer Lopez knows about the Talmud.
Traditional conservatives believe in fiscal responsibility.
George W. has given us a huge budget deficit. He has signed pork laden spending bills authorizing billions for absurdities like a bridge to nowhere in Alaska and a Museum to the Packard Automobile in Ohio.
Traditional conservatives believe, like George Washington, in "avoiding foreign entanglements."
George W. has sent American troops to the other side of the globe to "nation build."
Traditional conservatives believe in state's rights.
George W. has sought to oust the jurisdiction of Florida State courts when he didn't like the outcome of the Schivo case. He seeks a constitutional amendment concerning marriage, a traditional state prerogative. He uses Federal authority to deal with K-12 education, another local prerogative (and responsibility).
Traditional conservatives believe in individual rights.
George W. has used the so called Patriot Act to violate those rights. He has directed the NSA to conduct covert surveillance of American citizens. He attacks the rights of homosexuals. [NB:Barry Goldwater, iconic conservative leader, once said, "You don't have to BE straight to be in the army, you have to SHOOT straight"]
It is clear that what passes for "conservatism" today is far removed from the traditional conservatism of men like Senator Barry Goldwater. It won't pass muster with me or anyone else who believes that what a real conservative seeks to conserve is, first and foremost, the Constitution.

Me.
I was enthusiastic at first because of his pro-active stance on fighting terrorism. But it went downhill with the invasion of Iraq. I am all for the war, he just launched it against the wrong country. It should have been Iran. And on top of invading the wrong country, he has allowed the left to force him into fighting this war with political correctness as the main driver, tying the hands of our brave men and women and killing many of them unecessarily, just to please Murtha, Kerry, Durbin, and Feingold.
I oppose his amnesty plan, he has not vetoed one single spending bill, he is pussyfooting with Iran and N. Korea, he signed CAFCA, and he supported the sale of our ports to Arabs. About the only thing that he has done that is conservative in nature are the tax cuts.
That whole **** about the marriage amendment was embarrassing.
Where are the true conservatives!!!!! I think Santorum, Tancredo, and Hayward are the only ones. I wish Hayward would be president. He would *****-slap Kerry in a heartbeat (wait, as a liberal, he might like it, since he probably gets that from Teresa already)

Because he is a talking head! My God! The man is a willing tool!
His speeches are like loop tapes and appeal to peoples insecurities, their prejudice and to fanatical religious fundamentalists who would willingly turn this country into a theocracy. No different than Iran or Saudi Arabia.
Any self- respecting conservative should be be embarrassed by Bush.

Why are liberals answering this question? And why do they pretend to know so much about Conservatives?
I am conservative....and I like Dubya...I disagree with him on his immigration stance however.
warmwardbound: you voted for Kerry, AND he makes you want to shoot yourself? How do you feel about yourself now?

I like Bush as a person. His easy going nature is charming. I like his self depricating humor (when he stumbles over words, or correctly says a hard word).
BUT - He got this job mostly out of name recognition. He's way over his head. His biggest failing is that he has often been unwise in picking those around him. "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job!"
And he is so much NOT a conservative on the matters most important to me. (Fiscal)

Do you have anything better to do than sit around and Bush bash cuz I guess in today's society it is the "thing to do." You don't even know why you don't like Bush let alone have any of your facts right...or correct for that matter. If you want to argue about politics, go somewhere else, this is pretty, lets see, ignorant!

I don't like George W. Bush. I'm a conservative, and I voted for Kerry. I was ready for a fresh view of things, although some liberals make me wanna shoot myself (Hillary, Kerry, Kennedy)
