It's a decent question.

I tend to buy whatever's cheapest when it comes to Alcohol, because I avoid spirits and most beer tastes the same to me. I am pretty conservative with my money when it comes to every day stuff, but am willing to splash out for expensive holidays etc.

For me, the money I save being smart when drinking/doing other stuff pays for great trips.

Now, back to the question...If someone picks an expensive drink, they're either doing so to impress people, or because it's a taste to which they've become accustomed. So, what you drink does tell you a lot about who you are.

I imagine if you stick to the same beer wherever you go, even if the price fluctuates a lot, you're easy to please and know what you like. If your drink changes as the price changes, you want to have fun on a budget. If you pick expensive drinks such as age old whiskeys e.t.c. then you're probably trying too hard.

Maybe - but be careful. It could all too easly become, "I drank, therefore I am not," instead.
I imbibed pretty heavily for over 40 years - I even made up a little couplet about it:

I sometimes wonder why I drink
I think that it's because I think

Alcohol can be great - as long as you're using it and not vice versa.
