One is a matter of belief or disbelief, the other is a means for explaining the day to day functioning of the material world.

They aren't mutually exclusive. I'm an atheist myself and would be happy to say that science disproves gods, but it doesn't, it just disproves the need for god(s) that obviously meddle in the material world as explanatory devices.

You could quite easily believe in 'unmoved mover' type deities and still acknowledge the validity and utility of science.

God has an upper hand as compared to science. God created man and man came up with Science.Without God man would not have existed and likewise science.

So the world's scientests get so advanced that one day they decide that there is no need for God. They challenge him to a competion. So God says sure, we'll make a human being out of dirt. God picks up some dirt rubs it in his hands, molds it and creates a human who awakens and smiles, talks, etc. Upon seeing this the scientist think, well this is easy, they pick up some dirt and just before they get started God says "Uh-Uh, make your own dirt"
