How long it takes you to say 'enough is enough' depends on how much inner strength you have and how much self respect you have. Hopefully you learn from experience and the next time things go wrong you can get out quicker with your self respect still in tact. But some people never learn, and some are gluttons for punishment.
A lot of this comes down to being needy and not having enough going on in your life, which leads you to become dependent on people and to allow them to mess you around. If you are happy with your life and strong within yourself then you are less likely to invest your valuable time and emotions in people who take you for granted or don't deserve your energy.
Some people won't cut away from a bad situation for fear of getting hurt or fear of being alone. Once you realise that to be alone is nothing to fear, and that emotional pain eases with time, then you are not beholden to these fears anymore and you are better equipped to make the difficult decisions in life.
I hope that everything works out well for you, whatever your troubles may be. Take care... :)

Once you realise that you have been taken for a fool, you automatically prove that you are not one. You therefore have the upper hand. Use it and your clever little brain. Plan. Devise a way of making the person who did this to you pay for it, not physically, but in front of their friends. Something like, sitting on a plate of custard and pie, very simple to do. Or sitting in a lot of water on a chair and then casually ask the person in front of their friends, 'Have you just peed yourself'. Come on Carmen, I bet you can think of some that are even better than mine - you clever little devil...................

If some prank has been played and the subject is always brought up and laughed at anew. Simply say: Only boring people find a joke funny twice.
OR
A joke is never funny twice - and don't laugh with them, look them straight in the face without laughing.

When they cease to be one.
Everything you do, you do for a reason. You get something out of every relationship (even if it's punishment, or reaffirming your beleif that you are inadequate, or whatever). Once you realize what you're getting isn't of any value, and what you're giving is, the little light comes on.

I don't know. The reason I say this is because it seems like our hearts tend to take over first. Somtimes we tend to allow people to take advantage because we love them so much. The problem is we are cheating ourselves when we do that aren't we?

It depends. If you love them, It takes longer, but is more important to stop it. Otherwise, maybe it won't happen until you believe you deserve better than this treatment
