Not a direct correlation except in a logical way, but every time I hear California Dreamin' as sung by Bobby Womack (there's an ad that uses his version), I think about my first visit to the States, to visit with my then-fiancee and the most important friend she ever had. The friend, Annie, lived in San Clemente, and was seriously ill, but the tiem we spent was exactly like Womack's voice singing that song - hot wonderful evenings walking in the Pacific, eating Mexican and seafood on a restaurant jutting out into the sea, just soaking in the wonderment of all being together.
Annie died a few months later, but the Womack version of California Dreamin' still always takes me back to those precious days with the incredible woman who is now my wife, and her breathlessly intelligent, compassionate, complicated friend.
Indicentally, I know this doesn't have to be about Christmas, but the song that really says Christmas to me now is Frosty the Snowman sung in Chinese. When my fiancee first came across to London, it was a couple of days after Christmas, and I took her to a Thai restaurant in Covent Garden, and as we tucked into the best spring rolls we've ever tasted, we were serenaded by radio with Frosty the Snowman...in Chinese (I think...though of course it could have been Thai!)
