Because "palindrome" is just a word expressing the words that are pronounced the same backwards as well as forwards. "Palindrome" itself is not a word like that.

It was just the word given to mean "spelled the same forwards and backwards"... if the person who made this word was cleaver, I am sure they would have had a different word for this definition. :)
