In Christian mythology, the Holy Grail was the dish, plate, or cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper, said to possess miraculous powers. The connection of Joseph of Arimathea with the Grail legend dates from Robert de Boron's Joseph d'Arimathie (late twelfth century) in which Joseph receives the Grail from an apparition of Jesus and sends it with his followers to Great Britain; building upon this theme, later writers recounted how Joseph used the Grail to catch Christ's blood while interring him and that in Britain he founded a line of guardians to keep it safe. The quest for the Holy Grail makes up an important segment of the Arthurian cycle, appearing first in works by Chrétien de Troyes.[1] The legend may combine Christian lore with a Celtic myth of a cauldron endowed with special powers.
The development of the Grail legend has been traced in detail by cultural historians: It is a legend which first came together in the form of written romances, deriving perhaps from some pre-Christian folklore hints, in the later 12th and early 13th centuries. The early Grail romances centered on Percival and were woven into the more general Arthurian fabric. The Grail romances started in France and were translated into other European vernaculars; only a handful of non-French romances added any essential new elements.
Some of the Grail legend is interwoven with legends of the Holy Chalice.

this word has created a lot of contraversies after being told in The Da Vinci code. this word can be divided into 2 parts.
SANGREAL can be written as "sang real" where sang means royal and real means blood.this can also be written as "san greal" where san means holy and greal means grail.by this we can come to the conclusion(according to DVC) that mary magdalene was not only of a royal family but in fact the holy grail itself.

san greal means holy grail, sang real means holy blood. There is lots of debate over whether "sang real" was intentional or a typo.

well, breaking up a word into parts isnt always the best way to understand it's roots. try this: The word "politics" comes from the Greek word "Πολιτικά" (politika), modeled on Aristotle's "affairs of state", the name of his book on governing and governments, which was rendered in English mid-15 century as Latinized "Polettiques".[4] Thus it became "politics" in Middle English c. 1520s (see the Concise Oxford Dictionary). The singular "politic" first coined in English 1430 and comes from Middle French "politique", in turn from Latin "politicus",[5] which is the romanization of the Greek "πολιτικός" (politikos), meaning amongst others "of, for, or relating to citizens", "civil", "civic", "belonging to the state", [6] in turn from "πολίτης" (polites), "citizen"[7] and that from "πόλις" (polis), "city".[8] it's like saying the bible is actually referring to 2 balls.. >_> but yeah i get what you're saying haha. politics is messy and full of deception.
