If you are going out of the country and/or if you are traveling where you have to make several connections, like from a plane to a ship, or a plane to a train, its good to have insurance. You can shop online for insurance (site below). I always use Travelux and find them reasonably priced.

I always get travel protection when I am traveling. It just makes you feel more comfortable and covers a lot more. The insurance is very inexpensive compared to what you may have to pay if you don't have it. For example, if you are on a cruise and have to be airlifted off because you get sick, it will cost you over $20,000 and insruane will cover it.

If you have booked a package, you may already have travel insurance. Sometimes companies automatically include it and unless you say you don't want it, they leave it on. So, you should talk with either you travel agent or the company about whether or not you have it and if you don't how much it would cost to add.

There are a lot of companies out there for travel protection, just be sure to get a reliable company, you don't want any surprises later.

When we have travelled out of the country, we have always bought travel insurance. It has paid off in our case. my wife had to go to the emergency room in mexico and we had to take an emergency flight home. The $100 dollar insurance covered thousands in air fare, hospital bills, and paid for the nights we lost at the resort. Friends of ours also purchased insurance for a cruise, his father became ill and he had to stay behind and the insurance reimbursed him for the trip. If you are spending a lot on a trip, especially overseas, I would recommend spending the money for insurance.

You're taking a huge gamble if you don't get health insurance for travelling out of country.

The type of coverage you get depends where you're going and for how long. For example, if you're going to a less developed nation, you might want to get coverage that includes emergency transport back home. If you're travelling more than once in a year, consider a full year's coverage; if it's only one trip, just get a short term package that covers your travel dates.
