I used to spend alot of money until I bought a home and my situation changed. There are things you can do to spend less.

Rather than buy the stuffed toys from a pet shop that the pet will destroy get them at a Good Will store. Use caution on eyes and nose of stuffed toys you select.

I use Nutro dog food and it is costly but cuts down on vet bills and is digested better for the dog not to eat as much and it has glusomine in it also, no animal by products. So it costs about $50 for her food a month. She is 60 lbs.

At the veterinarian, you can ask for a tech rather than have the doctor and the shots are less.

Look into a private owned pet shop and pick up the flea meds there along with the heart worm. The dog food is sometimes less also.

You can reduce the amount of money yearly drastically.

$650 aprox a year

Well, $3 a month for food x's 12 that's $36 and $2 a week for a big bag of litter x's 52 that's $104 and about $1 a month for treats that's $12...the love and attention she gets is free...so 36+104+12=$152 a year...too damn much. I hate to add up the past 15 years though! THOUSANDS I am sure. And that's just one pet...that doesn't include the other kitties, the dogs, the turtles, the bird, the fish(es)...I could go on and on.

I found this at a site recently...was kind of interesting..

Typical breakdown:
$156 Routine vet visits
$289 Specialized vet visits
$187 Food
$45 vitamin supplements, worm medications

I would say their averages are pretty close to what I spend on those things, but I am one of those "dog moms" and Pixie has her own clothes, her own bed and car seat...so you can imagine what gets spent on the "non-essentials". Plus there is Duke, my other dog (no clothes for him...but LOTS of toys), the 3 cats, and 3 ferrets. I have never figured out exact costs, and frankly I am kind of scared to LOL.

Just one about $600 for all of them about $3000. Mine will be lower than others because I am able to do my own vet work so be prepared for a much higher figure for others. Also you can never be sure when an emergency might pop up and then you might have $3000 worth right there.

Just on the 4 horses and a few goats I spent over 6 thousand and that isn't counting the 5 dogs and six cats.

We spend approx $900 per dog per year. We have 4 dogs. This covers basic expenses (food, treats, vet bills, heartworm preventive, flea-tick, preventive, grooming, toys and dog license fees. This does not include any extra medical care and medications that they periodically need.

It's defintely $ well spent.
