If mishandled (someone went to the bathroom without washing his hands, then stuck his hands in the syrup) or untreated, it could definitely grow microorganims that can cause illness. However, I'm not aware of a plant disease that could be communicated to humans if that was your question.

I'm not sure if you mean like honey can give babies botulism? I'm sure that any food or drink can be a catalyst for any disease, bacteria, parasite or poison, but does it carry a bacteria or parasite? That I don't know but I would assume that it does. I think that maple syrup has to go through the same process as a lot of other things and be pasteurized.

i dont believe so, syrup is a sugar, which means its a preservative in its own right. Although it can at some point grow a mold that thrives on its surface. But i doubt that the mold itself can cause an illness, just a sour stomach.

I believe at some point the syrup crystalizes, but it doesnt go bad. Much like honey.

No, if so, it wouldn't be sold on the market. There are so many rumors going on about foods causing diseases and stuff but most have not even been proven. I don't stop eating oreos or potato chips. And there was rumor going around that they cause heart disease and cancer.
