The set came in a green box and a few cards were mailed out on a weekly basis or so. A color picture was on the front and info was printed on the back about the animal. A completed set had hundred's of cards in it. Who made those? Trying to get the same for my son.

Were they fairly big, square cards? I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about because me and my brother had them as kids too, and yeah, we'd get some in the mail. I'll look when I get home and let you know on here, if someone doesn't beat me to the punch.
Ok, I looked, I randomly found one card (apparently I didn't have the green box for them) and it had no information on it, like who published it, made me so mad. My husband had them too and he said National Geographic sent them out. I guess they wouldn't make them exactly the same today as they did then anyways. That Grolier answer down below doesn't look like the ones I remember. Besides those cards, I also had the Wildlife Fact Files as a kid, and they still make those, you can order them at 1-800-444-9270. Sorry. I know what you're talking about though!

I believe that they were made by Grolier, which is part of Scholastic. They still make some, but the monthly shipments "includes two new animal-themed soft cover books, 8 Animal Fun fact cards, stickers and animal clings all for the regular club price of only $10.99* per shipment."

I think they were called "Safari Cards" or something like that. I had a bunch of them, but I don't know where there are anymore. We ordered them out of a kids' nature magazine like Ranger Rick or something. I don't know who produced them, though.
