Lots of reasons. Society as a whole has this image of the perfect woman...she's cute, she's young, she's way too thin, she has lots of money and friends, doesn't seem to work, and always has a balanced life even if she has a job, kids and spouse. Real woman struggle to even come close to what the media and advertising and magazines have set up as the normal standard for women. It also doesn't help build self esteem when the men in your life are all of a more immature or shallow nature and subscribe to the above impossible definition. As a woman ages and matures, she gains back a whole lot more self esteem and keeps it intact. I hope this answers your question.

Well, I think that if you pick up a magazine or turn on the television, then you have an answer to your question! The role models that exist for women are difficult standards to live up to! Think about it, all the advertising is geared at women becoming more beautiful. Once upon a time this only consisted of make-up and fashion, now it has gone to the extreme of plastic surgery. Liposuction, breast implants, lip injections, etc. Imagine it becoming a common practice for men to get pec implants or penile implants? It will never happen. The pressure for women to be beautiful at any cost is absurd in our society. That doesn't mean that I don't buy into it, because I totally love make-up and fashion and I am fortunate enough to have a decent body. However, I can see why many women have such low self-esteem.

The entire capitalist system is based on women having low self-esteem. Advetisting and the media is constant showing women an ideal they can't live up to, and then showing them some product that will either get them closer to that ideal (supposedly), help them feel better about not reaching it, or help them attract a man which the media has also told them should be their ultimate goal in life. At the same time the media has also been showing men these impossible images of sickly thin women and telling them they they're the only type of women worth while, making it even harder for women to feel appealing, which means they need to buy more things to enhance themselves. It's a sick cycle.

Because of women like Jessica Simpson, Pamela Anderson, Angelina Jolie. Men always say how these are some of the hottest women around, so women want to look that good too for their men.

Because of all the wimpy guys that are scared to talk to them, especially if they're already beautiful. Also, because there are higher levels of beauty, why wouldn't a guy want a hot and intellegent girl? Because if I had a choice between a 10 with intellect, and a 5 with the same intellect, you can bet who I'm going to the movies with. Plus, usually the more beautiful women are more challenging then the plain or ugly ones, because they take all they can get.

well mainly because of advertising.in music videos where the women looks perfect and wen u get into the real world you realize that u don't look like that and guys do a great job at chasing after those perfect looking girls and no matter how beautiful a woman is they naturally look for something wrong with them and they will find it and usually its minor but society isn't doing anything to help the problem except for painful worthless surgery and pills.

It begins at home, while they are young. Some parents are partly to blame, siblings also play a significant role in a number of kids growing up with low self-esteem.They are not taught to love themselves for who they are. As the others have said, they feel that they have to meet the standards set by the women in the media. Sure they are georgeous, but what kind of personality, or character do they possess that would captivate a man's deep love and amoration? Most of those women are shallow, self-absorbed, egotists, that leaves very little room for a companion. What would I do if I had a choice between a movie/TV star, young and beautiful, or a non-actress, cute, slightly frumpy(not fat)? I would choose the latter, because she would be at my level, not with her head in the clouds, worlds apart from each other. Self-esteem can be built up easier that bringing down egoism.

because magazines and television make us feel like we have to look a certain way and when we do not and fail when we try, it becomes an issue as far as body image goes.
