Video games help with hand eye coordination. They also are beneficial training aids for things like flying a plane or helicopter, and driving a tank.

I used to think that video games were useless and a huge waste of time. While I know there are some people out there who play non-stop and waste hours upon hours each day, I believe there is a good use for video games in today's society. Although there are some video games that are only for one player, there are many that are for two or more - and that enables people to interact with others. It is really no different than before video games came into existence when we all played board games with family and friends. We just now play in a different mode - yet we have conversations, competition, and many, many laughs.
I am a single parent and my son and I play video games a few times a week together. It gives us a lot of time with each other and we laugh and laugh and laugh!
I also believe that video games build other skills that are beneficial. For example, if a child sits in front of a television for two straight hours, the only thing they are doing is watching and perhaps learning a little, depending on the show. If a child plays a video game for two hours, that child is not only learning finger dexterity, but is being mentally stimulated, using strategies to win the game, figuring out methods and ways of solving puzzles, etc.
I do, however, believe that there are many video games that are extremely violent and are not good for anything, other than violence. And while I understand that this is a free country and people have a right NOT to buy the product, children still do buy them without their parents' knowledge (and in some cases with) and then are exposed to the violence and other horrible things in the games. With both parents in many households working, some parents do not monitor their children's games as closely as they should. But that's just my opinion!
To answer the original question, I don't believe we "need" video games, but since they are in existence, we should at least use them to their full potential and realize the benefits from them.
