Try the Stephanie Plum mysteries by Janet Evanovich. Not violent, very good, extremely funny. You'll love Stephanie. She's a newly minted bounty hunter in New Jersey who's not quite sure how to do her job. The books are sequential, and start with "One for the Money." 2nd is "Two for the Dough" "Three to Get Deadly" etc. She's up to 12, and still going strong. Great characters and storylines. A must read.

Look for the Benni Harper series by Earlene Fowler. Benni is the director of a crafts museum and her new husband is the chief of police. She always seems to get involved in the investigations.
Joanna Fluke writes the Hannah Swenson series. Hannah runs a bakery and manages to get involved when things happen at the events she is present. Also there are some very good recipes in eaxh novel. Some titles are The Blueberry Muffin Mystery, The Peach Cobbler Mystery.

I am a huge fan of Karin Fossum, a Norwegian writer who is just not bwing published in the States. She writes police procedurals starring Inspector Konrad Sejer but gives her characters far more heart than, say, Henning Mankell. There is some language but not much, likewise with violence. So far three books have been released here; "Don't Look Back", "He Who Fears the Wolf" and "When the Devil Holds the Candle". The latest, "Devil" is actually pretty diturbing but the first two aren't too bad.

One series I really like are by Alexander McCall Smith.
It is about a woman in Botswana, Africa.
The first book in the series is "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency"
The central character is a woman, Precious Ramotswe. She opens a detective agency in her village. She helps solve mysteries- like wayward husbands, lost children, etc.
I am not a mystery reader by nature, but I liked the writing style and the inclusion of the culture within the novels.
McCall Smith has several novels with this character. I found them humorous, engaging and touching.

I am a huge James Patterson reader.Have been for a long time. I love the Alex Cross series. www.jamespatterson.com you can read a little bit in each book on this site. Just enough to get you hooked! You can buy em on ebay pretty cheap. Some times the whole series.
They are awesome books. You will not be able to put them down, you will want to read them one right after the other. I find myself reading slower at the end because I don't want it to be over, unless I have a new book to start up.
I suggest you read them in this order. You don't really have too but sometimes they make reference to past charaters.
ALONG CAME A SPIDER
KISS THE GIRLS
JACK & JILL
CAT & MOUSE
POP GOES THE WEASEL
ROSES ARE RED
VIOLETS ARE BLUE
FOUR BLIND MICE
THE BIG BAD WOLF
LONDON BRIDGES
MARY, MARY

Try the Amelia Peabody series of mysteries by Elizabeth Peters. They're set in Victorian England/Egypt and around archeology. I think they're lots of fun and quick reads.
